Admission Fee Exemption System

Your entrance fee can be exempted within the limit of our budget. Eligibility for application, financial situation of your family, and scholastic attainments are considered on the basis of our standards. Postponement of collection of your entrance fee means that the deadline of the collection is postponed. However, the same total sum will be collected.

Students eligible for exemption of the entrance fee

Different standards are applied to the students who enter an undergraduate school and the students who enter a graduate school. Applicants must satisfy any of the following conditions.

>>Students having entered an undergraduate school

  • Within one year before a student enters a school:
    1. the person who bears school expenses (example: father) has died, or
    2. the person who bears school expenses or the student him- or herself has suffered damage from a storm and/or a flood and therefore has extreme difficulty in paying his or her entrance fee.
  • A student who satisfies two or more of the following conditions:
    1. the person who bears school expenses is unemployed within one year before the student enters a school,
    2. the family of the student is receiving public assistance,
    3. the student is from a fatherless (or motherless) family,
    4. the person who bears school expenses are under medical treatment for a long period of time,
    5. the person who bears school expenses is a physically handicapped person, and so forth.

>>Students having entered a graduate school

  • A student has difficulty in paying his or her entrance fee because of a financial reason, and he or she is recognized as an excellent academic achiever.
  • Within one year before a student enters a school,
    1. the person who bears school expenses (example: father) has died, or
    2. the person who bears school expenses or the student him- or herself has suffered damage from a storm and/or a flood and therefore has extreme difficulty in paying his or her entrance fee.
  • A student satisfies a condition similar to either of the conditions described above.

Amount of exemption of the entrance fee

The total sum of the entrance fee that must be paid or a half of the total sum is exempted. In the cases in recent several years, awardees in graduate schools were exempted from a half of the total sum.

Process of application

"Application Guidelines for Exemption of Entrance Fee and Postponement of Collection of Entrance Fee" including the application period is distributed with documentation describing entrance procedures. Application result

Standard schedule of notification of application result

  1. Students having entered in the first semester: The beginning of June
  2. Students having entered in the second semester: The end of November

Deadline of payment when a half of the sum is exempted, when the application is not approved, or when the collection is postponed

  1. Within 14 days including the day of notification of application result
  2. When postponement of the collection is approved, students having entered in the first semester must make payment at or before the end of September, and students having entered in the second semester must make payment at or before the end of February.

Others

The entrance fee is not refunded if it is paid before your application for exemption of the entrance fee or for postponement of its collection is approved.
Applicants (students) are asked about the financial situation of their family and so forth.
Students are expelled if they do not pay the entrance fee on or before the deadline, excluding the case where they are exempted from the total sum.

Process of application

From 2011, tuition fee exemption applications will take place once a year as a general rule to reduce paperwork for applicants and promote efficiency and fairness. Applicants should check notices from their school or graduate school for application procedures.

  • Simultaneous first and second semester applications will start in 2011. If you intend to seek exemptions for both semesters, make sure you apply for both at the same time once a year.
  • The following persons may submit a separate application for the second semester at a later date:
    1. Returning or transfer students and new students entering Nagoya University in October 2011.
    2. Students who have undergone a sudden change in family situation after the main application period has closed.*
  • Students planning a leave of absence during the second semester may apply for a first semester-only exemption.
  • Under the new system, applications will be received once a year but will continue to be evaluated twice a year for the first and second semesters with separate results.

"Sudden change in family situation" refers to the following:

  1. Forced retirement or loss of employment due to bankruptcy, downsizing, or illness that has caused the income of the main provider of the family to drop significantly.
  2. The main provider of the family has died or become estranged.
  3. The main provider of the family has declared bankruptcy.
  4. The household has suffered a major disaster such as a fire, or wind or flood damage, requiring relief equivalent to that provided under the Disaster Relief Act, and resulting in a steep rise in household expenditure or drop in revenue.
  5. Entirely unavoidable circumstances, such as political upheaval and natural disasters causing politically unstable situations, or total cuts in national funding.

Note: Sudden changes in family situation do not include loss of income due to personal circumstances, loss of a scholarship, etc.

  • First-grade students of an undergraduate school and second-grade students of an undergraduate school in the first semester (excluding transfer students): Student General Welfare Division,Student Affairs Departmant
    Second-grade students of an undergraduate school in the second semester, third-grade and higher-grade students of an undergraduate school, and all students of a graduate school: Office of each department or course

    First semester: From the middle of January
    Second semester: From the middle of July
