A high-level delegation from the Philippine Commission on Higher Education (CHED) conducted a courtesy visit to Nagoya University's Higashiyama Campus on September 3, 2025.
The delegation was led by Dr. Ricmar P. Aquino, Commissioner of CHED, representing Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis, Chairperson of CHED, who joined the discussions online. Key participants included senior officials from CHED's International Affairs Service, chancellors and vice chancellors from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and Visayas State University, leadership from Central Luzon State University, as well as representatives from the Philippine Consulate General, including Consul General Ms. Shirlene C. Mananquil. The delegation represented both government and academic institutions across the Philippines.
The day began with a formal courtesy call with Nagoya University President Naoshi Sugiyama and Vice Presidents Ichiro Terasaki and Norimi Mizutani, followed by discussions and a working lunch. "I am so proud of the Nagoya University Asian Satellite Campus in the Philippines since it proves that our shared vision is not only achievable but also fruitful," said Chairperson Agrupis in her opening remarks. "I look forward to discussing the next steps as we work on strengthening our collaboration in higher education."
The afternoon featured guided tours of key campus facilities, including the Disaster Mitigation Research Building, the 2008 Nobel Prize Exhibition Hall, the innovative N2U Bridge, and Vice President Mizutani's tsunami research laboratory, providing insights into Nagoya University's cutting-edge research and educational infrastructure.
This visit reinforces the strong educational partnership between Japan and the Philippines, building upon Nagoya University's existing collaborations with Philippine institutions such as student exchange programs, joint research initiatives, and the Asia Satellite Campus Institute (ASCI). With 43 Filipino students currently studying at Nagoya University, this delegation visit highlights the continuing commitment to international academic cooperation and cross-cultural educational exchange in the Asia-Pacific region.
