Professor Masaki Kashiwara, who worked as an Associate Professor at Nagoya University from 1974 to 1977, has become the first Japanese recipient of the Abel Prize. He is currently a Specially Appointed Professor at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University and a Designated Professor at Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study.
The Abel Prize was established to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Norwegian mathematician Niels Abel. Its purpose is to recognize outstanding achievements in the field of mathematics with an international award.
The award recognizes Professor Kashiwara's "...fundamental contributions to algebraic analysis and representation theory, in particular the development of the theory of D-modules and the discovery of crystal bases."
