Professor Makoto Matsuoka of the Nagoya University Bioscience and Biotechnology Center has been chosen to receive the 67th Chunichi Cultural Prize.
The Chunichi Cultural Prize was established in 1947 by Chunichi Shimbun Co. (a Japanese daily newspaper company) to commemorate the enforcement of the Constitution of Japan. With a view to promoting science and art, this prize has been presented every year since 1948 to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in these fields and who have made a contribution to cultural advancement. Candidates recommended in the fields are carefully screened by the company, and a group of experts selects the winners.
Professor Matsuoka's prize-winning research is about a "new breeding method for rice using plant growth hormone."
The award ceremony will be held at the Chunichi Building in Sakae, Nagoya, on May 30 (Fri), 2014.
