Nagoya University Celebrates Fall 2024 Graduates of ASCI Transnational Doctoral Programs for Leading Professionals

The Asian Satellite Campuses Institute (ASCI) hosted a special graduation ceremony on 27 September 2024 to honour four graduates who earned their doctoral degrees in the Transnational Doctoral Programs for Leading Professionals this academic year. The event took place at the Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences. Professor Akira Yamauchi of ASCI introduced the graduates: Dr. Fayaz Said Hafizullah and Dr. Frozanfar Muhammad Kamel (both in Medicine from Afghanistan), and Dr. Hadji Cortez Jalotjot and Magsino Landicho (both in Bioagricultural Sciences from the Philippines). Congratulatory speeches were given by Nagoya University President Naoshi Sugiyama, Vice President Shogo Kimura, Dean Hiroshi Kimura of the Graduate School of Medicine, and Dean Mikio Nakazono of the Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences. After that, the four graduating students delivered presentations on their doctoral research.

Thesis Title: Investigation on the biological and molecular characteristics of cassava witches’ broom disease in the Philippines

ASCI is a major international outreach effort by Nagoya University with centers in Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, the Philippines, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. There are also programs, but without physical offices, in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar. The Transnational Doctoral Programs for Leading Professionals allows government officials to earn a PhD at one of six Nagoya University graduate schools (Law, Medicine, Bioagricultural Sciences, International Development, Environmental Studies, and Education and Human Development). Students can work while completing their degrees, avoiding career interruptions.
