On April 1, 2026, Nagoya University will establish a new overseas base in the United Kingdom, the Global Campus at the University of Edinburgh. The two universities share a long-standing partnership, centered on the Joint Degree Program (JDP) with the Graduate School of Science and strengthened through collaborative research in chemistry, physics, and frontier medical science, as well as joint initiatives in autonomous driving technologies, education, and welfare studies.

“We hope this center will promote excellence in education and research, while serving as a platform for fostering closer collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and neighboring universities,” said Nagoya University Vice President Norimi Mizutani. “It is a place to put our mission of taking on global challenges into practice.”

Nagoya University’s Global Campus is located within the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI), which seeks to solve complex societal issues through an innovative, data-driven, and interdisciplinary approach. By opening a Global Campus in this environment, Nagoya University aims to create new opportunities for students and researchers from both institutions to interact, collaborate, and leave a meaningful mark on the world.

“The Global Campus will be a place where students can grow into leaders who play an active role in the international community,” said Mizutani. “It will broaden their horizons through exposure to diverse cultures and values, and through contact with researchers at the cutting edge of their fields.”

The Global Campus deepens the partnership between the two universities and reflects Nagoya University’s broader commitment to international collaboration. Mizutani is optimistic about what lies ahead. “We hope to contribute to the world in both education and research,” he said.
