Computing exchange program advances cross-cultural learning between National University of Singapore and Nagoya University

From December 8 to 16, 2025, the Nagoya University School of Informatics welcomed 14 students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) School of Computing for the universities’ first-ever reciprocal exchange program in the field of computing. Eighteen Nagoya University students participated, engaging in intensive academic and cultural learning centered on cutting-edge themes such as AI and robotics.

The program featured visits to research groups and industry sites, including hands-on sessions in Professor Ogawa’s laboratory (Engineering) on android research and demonstrations of medical AI and VR technologies in Professor Mori’s laboratory (Informatics). Students also toured DENSO’s Advanced Research Center, gaining insights into the latest developments in AI and human-machine interfaces. Through these activities, participants were exposed to diverse research perspectives while deepening their academic curiosity.

A highlight of the program was the full-day “System Design Day” workshop, where Nagoya University and NUS students worked together in mixed teams. Combining lectures by an external expert with collaborative design exercises, the workshop strengthened students’ system-thinking abilities and cross-cultural collaboration skills.

This program follows a visit by Nagoya University students to NUS in July 2025 and marks the first bidirectional exchange between the School of Informatics and the School of Computing. It represents an important step toward deepening long-term educational and research collaboration. Participants reflected positively, noting that the experience “enabled meaningful academic discussions across cultures” and “provided new perspectives on how advanced technologies can be applied in society.”
