Nagoya University Professors Receive FY2021 MEXT Science and Technology Award

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has announced the recipients of its FY2021 Ministerial Awards for Science and Technology, including five researchers from Nagoya University (two for the Awards for Science and Technology, two for the Young Scientists’ Award, and one for the Outstanding Support for Research Award).

These awards are presented to researchers who have achieved significant advances in research, development, and promotion of public understanding for science and technology, with the aim of strengthening the motivation of researchers in the field and contributing to improvements in Japan’s level of science and technology. Awards are bestowed for the categories of Science and Technology (further categorized to "Development," "Research," "Science and Technology Promotion," "Technology," and "Public Understanding Promotion"), Young Scientists, Creativity, and Outstanding Support for Research.

Noriaki Sato

  • Category: Research

  • Position: Emeritus Professor

  • Achievement: Discovery of superconductivity and study of magnetism in quasicrystals

Kazuhiro Nakamura

  • Category: Research

  • Position: Professor, Graduate School of Medicine

  • Achievement: Research on central mechanisms of psychosomatic responses to overcome stress-related disease

Recipients of the Young Scientists’ Award

Takaki Yamauchi

  • Position: Associate Professor, Bioscience and Biotechnology Center

  • Achievement: Analysis of root aerenchyma formation that contributes to flooding tolerance of plants

Kei Murakami

  • Position: Former Designated Associate Professor, Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (currently Associate Professor, School of Science at Kwansei Gakuin University)

  • Achievement: Development of new catalytic reaction toward synthesis of structurally novel aromatic amines

Recipient of the Outstanding Support for Research Award

Keiko Kuwata

  • Position: Designated Lecturer, Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules

  • Achievement: Contribution to establishment of mass spectrometry support system that accelerates life science research
