Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE), Nagoya University has published a comic book, "What’s Space Weather? which explains research activities and forecasts of space storms by MANGA.
Space weather is natural phenomena such as solar flare, CMEs, geomagnetic storms, and their effects on satellites, astronauts, navigation, and telecommunications. In this booklet, space weather phenomena, their impact on social life, and space weather forecast are explained in an easy-to-understand manner, mainly for junior and senior high school students. The manga was created by a science manga artist Hayanon, who has been working on this series since 2002, and her production office, Science Manga Studio. The series explores "the space weather world" with Hayanon’s original characters, "Moru," a girl who loves science, and "Milbo," a robot dog.
The Solar-Terrestrial Environmental Laboratory, which is now part of ISEE, has been producing this manga series, "…What’s that? series in collaboration with Hayanon-san. This time, the manga "What’s Space Weather? was supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) from JSPS (Grant-in-Aid for International Leading Researchers, Project No. 22K21345, known as the PBASE Program). The production was supported by Prof. Kazuo Shiokawa, Director of the Space and Earth Environment Research Institute (SCOSTEP President), Prof. Yoshi Miyoshi (Bureau member of SCOSTEP), and Associate Prof. Ryuho Kataoka of the National Institute of Polar Research. This booklet will be further distributed to the kids in the world through the Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP).
