On November 3, 2025, the Government of Japan announced that Professor Eiji Shamoto of the Graduate School of Engineering has been selected to receive the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
One of the most prestigious awards in Japan, the Medal with Purple Ribbon is given to individuals with outstanding achievements and accomplishments in academics, sports, culture, or the arts.
Reason for award
In the field of machining science, Professor Shamoto contributed to the academic and industrial development of machining through: creating various new machining methods including “elliptical vibration cutting”; realizing ultra-precise micro-machining of die steels; establishing three-dimensional cutting theory and elucidating practical metal cutting mechanisms; investigating self-sustained vibration phenomena occurring during various machining processes and enhancing machining efficiency; and developing high-speed, high-precision trajectory generation methods for machining equipment.
