Nagoya University established the Research Center for Safety Science on April 1, 2025. The Center aims to develop innovative research and educational frameworks for managing the safety risks associated with cutting-edge research. The initiative will ultimately enhance safety protocols not only at Nagoya University but also across universities throughout Japan.
In recent years, new challenges have emerged as research fields have diversified and society has grown more complex. Traditional one-size-fits-all safety regulations are no longer sufficient to address these risks. University research environments, where exploration of the unknown is fundamental, constantly generate unique hazards that require tailored responses in specific situations.
Among other activities, the Center will conduct data-driven analysis using Nagoya University’s comprehensive database of academic incident reports. Through this work, researchers will design integrated accident information systems, apply deep learning techniques to identify risk patterns, and implement a digital transformation of safety processes. All the resulting methodologies will be tested and validated within the university. This integration of advanced research, safety education, and practical application represents a first-of-its-kind approach in Japan and will enable the Center to develop evidence-based safety designs and educational techniques.
