Nagoya University Professors Receive FY2019 MEXT Science and Technology Award

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has announced the recipients of its FY2019 Commendation for Science and Technology by MEXT, including six researchers from Nagoya University (two for the Science and Technology Prize, and four for the Young Scientist Prize).

These prizes are awarded to researchers who have achieved significant advances in research, development, and promotion of public understanding for science and technology, with the aim of strengthening the motivation of researchers in the field and contributing to improvements in Japan’s level of science and technology. Awards are bestowed for the categories of Science and Technology (further categorized to "Development," "Research," "Science and Technology Promotion," "Technology," and "Public Understanding Promotion"), Young Scientist, and Creativity.

The award ceremony will be held at MEXT on April 17 (Wed), 2019.

Motoyuki Ashikari

  • Category: Research

  • Position: Professor, Bioscience and Biotechnology Center

  • Achievement: Identification of important agricultural trait genes and its application

Masazumi Okido

  • Category: Research

  • Position: Professor, Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability

  • Achievement: Research on Construction of Surface Nano-hierarchy Structure and Application to Biomaterials

Recipients of the Young Scientists’ Prize

Kazunori Shimizu

  • Position: Associate Professor, Graduate School of Engineering

  • Achievement: Research on the functional expression in biological tissues using microdevices

Daisuke Yokogawa

  • Position: Associate Professor, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo (Former Designated Associate Professor, ITbM, Nagoya University) *Nominated by Nagoya University while he was affiliated with the university.

  • Achievement: Development and application of solvation theories for understanding chemistries in solution at atomistic level

Kunihiro Morishima

  • Position: Designated Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Science

  • Achievement: Development of cosmic-ray imaging technologies with nuclear emulsion and its applications

Hidefumi Shinohara

  • Position: Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Science

  • Achievement: Research on the mechanisms of cell-cell interactions mediated by peptide hormones and receptors in plants
