Professor Naoko Maeda re-elected as member of UN Committee against Torture

On October 1, 2025, Professor Naoko Maeda of Nagoya University’s Graduate School of Law was re-elected as a member of the Committee against Torture for the 2026–2029 term at the 20th Meeting of States Parties to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment at the United Nations European Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Professor Maeda was appointed as a member of the Committee in 2022 and has served as the Vice-Chairperson since 2024.

In this election, Professor Maeda received the highest number of votes among candidates from various countries, reflecting the high regard many nations have for Professor Maeda’s accomplishments to date.

As Professor Maeda continues to make use of her extensive knowledge and experience to contribute to the international community as a member of the Committee against Torture, her activities will also benefit students and researchers at Nagoya University’s School and Graduate School of Law.
