
On October 3, 2025, Nagoya University hosted a courtesy visit from a delegation representing Peking University, led by President Gong Qihuang. The meetings included Nagoya University President Naoshi Sugiyama, Nobel laureates Ryoji Noyori (Chemistry, 2001) and Hiroshi Amano (Physics, 2014), as well as other university officials. The visit focused on strengthening academic ties and discussing ongoing and future collaboration between the two universities.
The Peking University delegation consisted of President Gong Qihuang, Professor Dong Bin (Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research), Director Sun Hua (Office of the Provost), and Director Li Yun (Office of International Relations), among others. On the Nagoya University side, attendees included President Sugiyama, Nobel laureates Noyori and Amano, and Vice President Norimi Mizutani.
During the visit, the delegation toured research facilities at Nagoya University, including the Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability (IMaSS). Takuetsu Distinguished Professor Hiroshi Amano provided an overview of the group’s current research activities, highlighting joint research with the next generation of Chinese scholars. The courtesy visit featured exchanges of views on academic cooperation, with President Gong expressing appreciation for the hospitality and the ongoing partnership.



Distinguished Professor Ryoji Noyori addressed the group, reflecting on the history of academic exchange between Japan and China. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change and the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Professor Noyori also noted that the future of society will depend on the creativity and collaboration of young people, expressing hope that students from both universities will develop a shared awareness of humanity’s future.




Nagoya University and Peking University have maintained a partnership since the signing of an academic exchange agreement in 2002. Over the years, the universities have engaged in collaborative projects, faculty and student exchanges, and joint research initiatives. Faculty members from Nagoya University have received honorary professorships from Peking University, and both institutions participate in international programs such as CAMPUS Asia. The ongoing exchange of students and researchers continues to strengthen the relationship, with both universities expressing optimism about future collaboration and the broader impact on the academic community.
