Nagoya University, Chinese Consulate in Nagoya explore educational and research exchanges

On July 4, 2025, Consul General Xian Yang from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Nagoya visited Nagoya University for a courtesy call and campus tour. The consul general was welcomed by Nagoya University President Naoshi Sugiyama and Tokai National Higher Education and Research System (THERS) Chancellor Seiichi Matsuo. Professor Hiroyuki Koyama, Executive Director of the Organization for Promotion of Glocalization at Gifu University, participated in the meeting online.

The tour included several key facilities on the Higashiyama Campus. Consul General Yang first visited the Yu Dafu Memorial, which commemorates the 20th-century Chinese writer who studied at one of the high schools that later became a department at Nagoya University. The itinerary also included the newly opened Common Nexus (ComoNe), which serves as a hub connecting universities and broader society. The building, which opened on July 1, 2025, features spaces for creative exhibitions, student-business exchanges, and hands-on educational programs designed to disseminate academic knowledge to the public.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss upcoming educational exchanges, including a September 2025 program where students from Nagoya University and Gifu University will travel to Yunnan Province, China. The six-day visit will include exchanges with Chinese university students, visits to artificial intelligence companies, and cultural experiences exploring the region’s biodiversity and ethnic minority cultures.

The meeting reinforced the strong academic partnership between the institutions and China. The universities maintain extensive academic agreements with Chinese institutions at both university and departmental levels. Nagoya University and Gifu University expressed their commitment to continuing collaborative educational and research initiatives, with the Consulate General providing ongoing support for student exchanges and academic cooperation that benefits both nations’ educational development.
