Announcements

In memory of Uichiro Niwa

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Uichiro Niwa.

After graduating from Nagoya University’s School of Law in 1962, Niwa joined ITOCHU Corporation, where he rose to serve as president, chairman, and senior advisor. Following his retirement from ITOCHU, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the People’s Republic of China, holding this position from June 2010 to December 2012.

Niwa remained connected to Nagoya University, serving as a member of the Management Council and the Presidential Selection Committee, providing valuable guidance on university management and public service, drawing on his extensive business experience.

Additionally, he served as head of the Tokyo area branch of the School of Law Alumni Association from May 2000, and when the university-wide Alumni Association was established in October 2002, he became vice president and worked to establish a chapter in the greater Tokyo region. Niwa was awarded an honorary doctorate from Nagoya University in 2013 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of the alumni association, as well as his long-standing efforts to foster closer ties between the alumni association and the university.

The university community is profoundly grateful for Niwa’s numerous contributions. May he rest in peace.
