Makoto Matsuoka, Professor of the Bioscience and Biotechnology Center, Nagoya University, has been selected to receive the Duke of Edinburgh Prize from the Japan Academy. This prize was established in 1987 in response to the suggestion of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who is an honorary member of the Japan Academy. It is awarded once every two years to a Japanese scientist with outstanding achievements in the area of wildlife protection and species preservation.
His prize-winning research is about the "effects of gibberellin, a photohormone, to preserve species and improve botanical diversity and food productivity."
