Japanese language education

Nagoya University offers comprehensive Japanese language education programs for international students at various proficiency levels. The Language Education Center provides courses to meet diverse needs of Japanese language education both within and outside the university. The Language Education Center also offers education in other languages through the Foreign Language Education Division.

Program overview

The purpose of these programs is to develop Japanese language skills required for daily life and research activities at Nagoya University for international students enrolled at the university. Programs run during spring semester (April to August) and fall semester (October to February).

Available programs

University-wide Japanese program

This program serves international students including undergraduate, graduate, research students, special auditing students, and short-term international students. Prospective students take a placement test before the program begins and are placed in each course according to the results of the placement test.

NUPACE Japanese program

For international students belonging in the Nagoya University Program for Academic Exchange (NUPACE), the objective is to improve students’ Japanese language skills necessary for daily life and research activities at the university. There are six levels of courses: three levels for beginners, one level for elementary and intermediate, two levels for intermediate, and one level for advanced.

Training course in Japanese language

The Intensive Program in Elementary Japanese is a 6 months course for Japanese Government Scholarship international research students and teacher training students with no prior knowledge of Japanese.

Training course in Japanese language and Japanese culture

The Intensive Program in Advanced Japanese is for Japanese Government Scholarship international students (Japanese studies students).

Japanese language classes for international undergraduate students

Specialized courses designed for degree-seeking international undergraduate students to support their academic studies.

Nagoya University Short-Term Japanese Language Program (NUSTEP)

NUSTEP offers two weeks of intensive Japanese classes for students currently enrolled as degree-seeking students in universities with academic exchange agreements with Nagoya University. Students gain better understanding of Japanese culture and society through a wide range of curricula including traditional Japanese culture experiences, homestays, company visits and exchanges with local students.

Eligibility

Enrollment eligibility varies by program. International students at Nagoya University and participants in exchange programs are generally eligible. Other foreign researchers at Nagoya University who are appproved by the Director of the Center for Language Education may take the courses.
