Tokai National Higher Education and Research System (THERS)

What is THERS?

The Tokai National Higher Education and Research System (THERS) is a national university corporation that was established in April 2020. This innovative partnership brings together two major national universities: Nagoya University and Gifu University. By combining the strengths and resources of both institutions, THERS aims to contribute to the development of the Tokai region—an area in central Japan spanning Aichi, Gifu, Mie, and Shizuoka Prefectures—while pursuing world-class education and research excellence.

The THERS network

THERS connects Nagoya University and Gifu University in a unified system that maintains each university’s distinct identity while fostering collaboration. The system encompasses both universities’ campuses, facilities, and academic communities, creating opportunities for educational and research partnerships.

Core mission

THERS was established with the fundamental goal of promoting academic advancement and regional development. The system works to enhance higher education and research capabilities in the Tokai region while contributing to society through academic excellence and innovation.

Research focus

As a system-wide institution, THERS emphasizes research that addresses both regional and global challenges. This includes work in fields where both universities have demonstrated strengths, such as engineering, environmental studies, and life sciences.

Academic environment

Students at THERS member universities benefit from being part of this broader academic network. The system creates an environment that supports both universities in their missions to provide high-quality education and conduct cutting-edge research.
