Starting from AY2028, Nagoya University will change admissions to the “Privately Financed International Student Admissions” category. This term is the English translation of the official Japanese name for this specific admissions category (私費外国人留学生入試); it does not refer to self-financed international students in general. Throughout this announcement, “Privately Financed International Student Admissions” refers only to this specific examination category, while “self-financed international students” refers more broadly to students who fund their own studies. This category is distinct from the university’s general undergraduate admissions process.
The “Privately Financed International Student Admissions” category consists of a standalone undergraduate entrance examination held once a year on its own application and examination schedule. The specific examination components — such as the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), written test, essay, or interview — vary by academic program. It is open only to self-financed international students based outside Japan who are applying for April entry to a defined set of undergraduate programs taught in Japanese. Self-financed international students remain a valued part of Nagoya University’s community, and they can continue to apply to the university through other admissions routes.
Accordingly, the AY2027 round of the “Privately Financed International Student Admissions” category (April 2027 entry), for which application guidelines have already been published, will be the final one. Nagoya University made this decision after carefully considering the reduced number of applicants to this category and the increase in applicants to the G30 International Programs over several years, and as part of a broader effort to revise the university’s admissions processes. This decision only affects applicants to the “Privately Financed International Student Admissions” category.
There are no changes to the admission categories for the following groups, all of which remain open to self-financed international students: undergraduate and graduate students in the G30 International Programs; graduate students in other programs; and non-degree students, such as research students. There is also no change to admissions for Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship students. Other admission categories, such as General Selection (which uses the Common Test for University Admissions), remain open to all eligible students, on the same basis as before, including self-financed international students.
Nagoya University’s undergraduate and graduate programs, including the G30 International Programs, continue to welcome applications from international students of all backgrounds, and the university remains committed to expanding opportunities for international study through its other admissions categories. The university will continue to foster an educational and research environment that welcomes and draws on the talents of domestic and international students and researchers of all backgrounds.
