Nagoya University's Declaration of Principles to Protect the Dignity of Individuals and Respect Diversity

The Nagoya University Academic Charter promises a "culture of free and open-minded academic endeavor" and acknowledges its mission of "contributing to the prosperity and happiness of all people through research and education in those fields studying human beings, society, and the natural world." Consistent with this goal, Nagoya University maintains a campus that protects the dignity of all students, faculty members, and staff members' and respects their individuality. For this purpose, it seeks to eliminate discrimination based on nationality, ethnicity, language, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, political opinion, social status, and disability. Its goal is to apply this to every aspect of education, research, and work.

Some members of the Nagoya University community require 'necessary and reasonable accommodations.' The university must improve its support system to dissolve those barriers that damage the dignity and threaten the individuality of its members. Community members must respect the dignity and individuality of others and work to create an open environment.

So that everyone may achieve happiness both on and off campus, and make use of their abilities, Nagoya University promotes various initiatives regarding diversity, including striving for gender equality, support for people with disabilities, support for cultural diversity, eliminating discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The university also provides educational opportunities to foster greater understanding of diversity among its members. Through these activities and initiatives, the university seeks to create an educational, research, and work environment where everyone can achieve a work/study-life balance consistent with their identity and abilities.

Guideline for Promoting Gender Equality

The Nagoya University Recommendation about Promoting Gender Equality states: "it is not an exaggeration to say Nagoya University's future in the 21st century will depend on promoting gender equality in education and research". To fulfill this mission, it prioritizes implementing a gender equality policy ensuring that women and men are equal members of the community, they can join all activities, and they share responsibilities.

Through implementing the initiatives below, Nagoya University seeks to create an environment where all of its members can realize their individuality and use their abilities, regardless of gender:

  • Empower women in administration, research, and education;
  • Increase the percentage of women researchers and women leaders;
  • Support a work-life balance that takes into consideration life events including having a baby, childcare, family care, and maintaining an environment for education, research, and work; and
  • Provide training and research on gender-related issues.

Guideline for Eliminating Discrimination based on Disabilities

Nagoya University strives to eliminate discrimination against people with disabilities (including, but not limited to, orthopedic and motor impairments, hearing impairments, visual impairments, intellectual impairments, psychiatric disorders, developmental disorders, and impairments due to disease). The university seeks to provide reasonable accommodation so that those with and without disabilities can take part in education and research.

By implementing the initiatives below, Nagoya University seeks to create an environment where all members can realize their individuality and use their abilities, regardless of limitations:

  • Eliminate discrimination towards those with disabilities;
  • Provide reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities and maintain and improve its quality; and
  • Provide training to increase understanding of disabilities and construct a cooperative support system for disabled members of the community.

Guidelines for International Diversity

Since Nagoya University recognizes that maintaining a diverse community benefits research and education, it supports students, faculty members and staff from various nationalities, cultural backgrounds, linguistic backgrounds, and religions. It is necessary to improve the environment in which people from such backgrounds can take part in all aspects of education and research. The university maintains a duty to promote a diverse environment for education, research, and work.

Through implementing the initiatives below, Nagoya University seeks to build a suitable environment for international diversity:

  • Identify differences among its community members and implement strategies in line with these findings;
  • Provide various opportunities for all community members to learn about the benefits and influence of international diversity; and
  • Improve the environment so it better welcomes people of different nationalities, cultural backgrounds, and religions.

Guidelines for LGBT+

Nagoya University includes a diverse range of members. Discrimination against certain groups is sometimes overlooked and, therefore, needs special attention. One example is the LGBT+ community ("LGBT+" refers to "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender," with the "+" sign showing other types of sexual orientation and gender identity).

Through implementing the initiatives below, Nagoya University seeks to create an environment that respects the sexual orientation and gender identity of its members:

  • Introduce measures to eliminate discriminatory initiatives at all stages including the classroom, student life, during the job search, and while studying abroad;
  • Provide educational activities for increasing understanding of issues faced by the LGBT+ community; and
  • Designate a contact desk for the above initiatives.
