The School of Economics has been a front runner in economic science in Japan since its predecessor, Nagoya Koutou Syogyo Gakko (Nagoya High School of Commerce), was established in 1920. In addition, many graduates of the School have been active in front lines of business and academic research.

The School of Economics has two departments, the Department of Economics and the Department of Business Administration. The former focuses on economic theory, history, and policy, while the latter addresses principles of management and accounting systems. The Graduate School of Economics also has two departments, the Department of Socio-Economic System and the Department of Industrial Administration System.

The School of Economics has recently strengthened its information processing section. An Information Processing Room has been set up, and computer-aided study is emphasized in both coursework and research. The School has the Economic Research Center, which includes three research sections. Their themes are Asian economy and regional partnership, international management, and resource and environment policy. In addition, the Center is proud of its unit for policy research, which analyzes current economic and business issues.
